There is a quote out there about attitudes by a guy named Charles Swindoll. I don’t know the origin of the story but if you’ve never read it I highly recommend that you do… You can find it and print it out for free here.

As many of you know I am a huge fan of personal development. I love to find anything possible out there that I can watch or read that can help to elevate my mindset to the next level. I am a firm believer in duplicating the success of others. So much so that I found some principles to live by that I learned from Motivational Speaker Zig Ziglar that I wanted to share.

So one day I’m out and about and I stopped by Half Price Books and while I was looking around I noticed a 4 cassette tape series by Zig Ziglar. (Sorry I can’t think of the name right now)

It was on sale for $1.00 so I couldn’t refuse… Anyway, one day I was listening to one of my tapes and Zig started to discuss the topic of whether or not we respond to life or do we react? He went a little further to break it down by saying that to respond to life is positive while reacting was negative.

I didn’t quite get the concept at first until he used the following illustration…

He said that when a person is sick and they have to go to a doctor that a doctor will give them a prescription for their illness. After several days the doctor calls you back in to check your progress and is concerned that your body is reacting to the medicine. So of course you’re body has had a negative response and he changes your prescription.

Now after you’ve changed medicines and gone back to the doctor for your next follow up visit the doctor is excited and happy and tells you that your body is responding to the medicine and that everything is going to be alright.

So the next time that you have an altercation, argument, or any other type of potentially stressful situation I want you to ask yourself this question:

Did I respond to that situation or did I react?

By learning to respond to life’s situations and circumstances instead of reacting, you have much more power over the situation itself as well as your attitude towards it.
